A three-hour company visit exploring M&A and career pathways reflects the firm's commitment to developing the next generation of industry leaders.
JAKARTA - Protemus Capital hosted 62 students from the Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga (BEM FEB UNAIR), at its Jakarta office on Thursday, 22 October 2026. The company visit gave students an opportunity to learn about mergers and acquisitions (M&A), understand the work of a strategic advisory firm, and explore potential career pathways in finance and advisory services.
For a firm that
guides founders and shareholders through complex transactions, the afternoon
was a deliberate change of pace. Between 12.30 and 15.30, the Protemus team set
aside its usual deal calendar to explain advisory work and give students a
closer look at the professional environment behind M&A transactions. The
visit connected concepts from their studies with practical business decisions.
The session
began with an introduction to Protemus Capital, a boutique M&A and
strategic advisory firm serving mid-sized and family-owned businesses across
Southeast Asia. The team outlined why companies may engage investment bankers
during important business decisions: to obtain objective financial judgment,
align stakeholders, and access specialist expertise throughout a transaction.
Students were
guided through the firm’s sell-side process, from preliminary assessment and
investor outreach to due diligence, transaction documentation, and completion.
The overview illustrated that M&A involves more than reaching a valuation
or finding a potential buyer; it also requires coordination, careful
assessment, and alignment between the parties involved. An anonymised case from
the firm’s own work, the carve-out and sale of a fiber optic business through a
competitive process helped bring these concepts into focus. The example showed
how strategic considerations, tax efficiency, and valuation can come together
when structuring a transaction, while maintaining client confidentiality.
The session
highlighted a central principle of M&A: a transaction can move forward when
both sides find common ground. Reaching that point requires an understanding of
the business, the priorities of its stakeholders, and the factors that
influence a transaction’s structure and outcome.
The visit also
introduced students to career opportunities and development paths at Protemus
Capital. The team explained how a career typically begins with an internship,
followed by a full-time role as an analyst, with opportunities to grow through
the ranks. The team also outlined the five-step recruitment process, from
application and HR assessment to interviews with the Director and Partner,
followed by onboarding. This overview gave students a clearer picture of the
path into the firm and how to prepare for each stage.
The afternoon
concluded with an office tour and a group photo, bringing the visit to a close
after two hours of discussion and learning. For students considering careers in
finance, the opportunity to hear directly from practitioners offered a
practical introduction to the people, processes, and professional pathways
behind advisory work.
